Bible: Classes will study Bible from the Purposeful Design series. Lower middle school will study age-appropriate Bible lessons and upper middle school will study topics such as “To the Ends of the Earth,” “The Life of Christ” and “Daring Deliverers.” “To the Ends of the Earth” is an in-depth study of the book of Acts in which students will witness the birth and expansion of the early Christian church. Students will learn to apply the principles demonstrated in the lives and actions of the heroic men and women of Acts. “The Life of Christ” allows students to investigate Jesus’ life through 40 lessons incorporated into a student textbook/resource guide and student workbook. “Daring Deliverers” leads students to a better understanding of Israel’s history through the lives of godly characters in the time of the judges.
MCA will teach biblical truths and defend the Christian faith against teachings which are not congruent with the inerrant, infallible Word of God.
According to Karen Wrobbel, Education Coordinator for The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM) and an ACSI certified “Bible specialist,” there are several essential objectives in establishing Bible curricula for Christian-based learners:
1. Trace God’s work and plan for humankind through the ages.
2. Describe the flow and sequence of God’s working with humankind in the Old Testament.
3. Explain God’s new covenant with humankind as presented in the New Testament.
4. Identify major events, people, and movements in the spread of Christianity since the close of the New Testament.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of basic Bible doctrines: God the Father, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, the Bible, salvation, sin, man, prophecy.
6. Effectively communicate his/her faith with others.
7. Defend his/her beliefs.
8. Compare the principles and practices of diverse religious groups with Scriptural teaching.
Literature: MCA utilizes Purposeful Design (ACSI) literature resources. Purposeful Design is the premier provider of Christian school textbooks and resources. These textbooks examine literature with the highest academic standards while maintaining the ideology of “Kingdom” education. Students in the 6th grade will study world-class literature which is appropriate to a sixth grader’s sensibilities, fostering thinking and talking about values, ideals and behavior. Students in the 7th grade will study from a text book replete with literature that spans several centuries and is drawn from regions around the globe. 8th graders will study a highly literate curriculum with in-depth and engaging avenues of learning in the comprehensive format of literature. For more information, visit purposefuldesign.com.
History: MCA teachers will utilize the A Beka Book series for teaching 6th-8th grade U.S. History and Old World History. The A Beka Book approach to Christian education keeps learning lively, interesting, and memorable. The materials reflect sensible theory that is firmly anchored in practical application. Geography is integrated into history lessons.
Language/Spelling: A Beka Book follows a Christian principle based on Proverbs 22:6--
“The God-given ministry of parents and Christian schools is to lead young people to Christ and train them in the Bible, Christian character, language, and traditional subject matter. Today’s students need to be taught the accumulated wisdom of the past from God’s point of view and trained in the way they should go.”
The A Beka Book Language Arts Program provides students the necessary tools to write and speak clearly and effectively and to read with comprehension, appreciation and discernment. For more information, visit abeka.com. Click on the “resource” link to access specific core subject overviews.
**A Beka Book skilled researchers and writers do not paraphrase progressive education textbooks and add biblical principles. They perform primary research in every subject and create textbooks from a biblical world view, built upon the firm foundation of Scriptural truth.
Science: The lower middle school will utilize the Purposeful Design science textbook.
The lessons will explore scientific realities within the framework of a Christian
overview. The living world with all its wonders is presented from a biblical worldview
with updated content on organism classification, cellular biology, genetics and the
distinctions between Creation and evolution. For upper middle school, MCA students
will study science from a biblical viewpoint—they will explore God’s creation, investigating
the far reaches of the universe, the structure and inhabitants of the earth and the
workings of cells and atomic reactions. Students will witness God’s orderliness
in both physical and biological systems.
Space and Earth Science will allow middle school students to examine God’s handiwork in the heavens. Students will see the perfection of God’s design in the universe, including space, the atmosphere, the lithosphere and the hydrosphere.
Math: MCA will use Purposeful Design Math for its 6th-8th grade levels. Qualifying 8th grade students will be placed in pre-algebra. The Purposeful Design approach to math education emphasizes the development of math concepts and the ability to solve application problems. Concept development includes the use of manipulatives, investigations, and hands-on activities. Current research in math education shows that concept development and application are essential for a quality education. Algebra and geometry strands begin at the kindergarten level, leading students to be successful in high school mathematics. Problems have been designed to provide a reasonable balance of practice and application. Visit purposefuldesign.com or acsi.com for more information.
